Itinerary
DAY 1 Arrive Phoenix. Welcome to Phoenix Arizona! Walk out of the airport and take a deep breath of warm, dry, comfortable desert air and take the complimentary shuttle to our hotel. Gary, our tour guide, will be there to help with the check-in process. During the initial tour briefing this evening, we’ll get the paperwork out of the way and give you useful and important information about the upcoming adventure. After that there may be time to enjoy a dip in the beautiful hotel pool, grab a bite to eat and have a drink. Get a good night’s rest because tomorrow we begin the first part of an exciting journey.
Early Birds. If you’re getting in a day or two early, we definitely suggest you pay a visit to Taliesin West, the home and museum campus of Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s Architect. It’s just a few minutes away and the views alone are breathtaking, and his concepts and ideas about incorporating surrounding nature elements into his architecture are truly fascinating. Enjoy!
DAY 2 Phoenix – Sedona (160 miles). After our Welcome Breakfast and final briefing, we pick up our bikes, load up the van and we’re on our way. Heading northwest out of Phoenix across the desert we then rise up through the pine trees to Jerome for lunch. Jerome, once a mining town, is perched high on a mountainside, and is our first experience of serious twisting mountain roads. Then it is down to the famous red rocks of Sedona. Sedona was first settled in 1876 and is famous for its climate and stunning natural beauty.
DAY 3 Sedona – Safford (280 miles). We ride through the mountains and valleys of central Arizona to the historic town of Globe. Globe's history is laced with many historic events such as murders, stagecoach robberies, outlaws, lynchings, and Apache raids. Globe is also known as the home of Geronimo and the Apache Kid. The film Last Train to Yuma is based on the story of the Apache Kid. And there are links to the OK Corral as well! Our ride continues past giant saguaros to the small ranching community of Safford.
DAY 4 Safford – Bisbee (130 miles). We ride south out of the mountains and into the desert valley below. Our first stop is the historic mining town of Tombstone, home of probably the most famous gunfight of all, at the OK Corral. After taking time to watch the gunfight, it’s just a short ride to Bisbee, and our historic hotel, the Copper Queen. The hotel has three resident ghosts.
DAY 5 Bisbee - Silver City (260 miles). Leaving Bisbee behind us we head back into the hills and mountains of New Mexico to historic Silver City, founded in 1870, not surprisingly with the discovery of sliver nearby. In 1875, Sheriff Whitehill became the first lawman to arrest ‘Billy the Kid’, known at the time as William Bonney. Silver City was the also finish line in the 2001 movie “Rat Race”.
DAY 6 Silver City - Las Cruces (210 miles). Leaving Silver City behind us we head through the Gila National Forest to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument for a brief look around. The cliff contains the ruins of interlinked cave dwellings built in five cliff alcoves by the Mogollon peoples between 1275 and 1300 AD. The dwellings were a perfect place for human living. The caves provided adequate shelter, while the wooded area concealed the homes. The nearby area also provided for growing and finding food. We then ride through the hills and down to the Rio Grande Valley below and follow the old Spanish trail, the El Camino Real, to ‘Old’ Mesilla, incorporated in 1848 after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo moved the US-Mexico border. During the Wild West era, Mesilla was known for its cantinas and festivals and as a stagecoach crossroads and was frequented by many an outlaw..
DAY 7 Las Cruces – Carlsbad (240 miles). Leaving Las Cruces we ride through the Organ Pipe mountains pass and down into White Sands National Monument where we stop to admire the beauty of the great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand that have created 275 square miles of desert. The White Sands Missile Range is located on the northern boundary, the Trinity Site is where the first atom bomb was detonated. Afterward we head to Alamagordo and up into the mountains to Cloudcroft for lunch. It’s then an empty road across the great plains to Carlsbad. Originally called Eddy(!), with the commercial development of local mineral springs for medicinal qualities, the town changed its name to Carlsbad, after the famous European spa Carlsbad (now Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). The rediscovery of Carlsbad Caverns (then known as ‘Bat Cave’) by local cowboys in 1901 and the subsequent establishment of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in May 1930 brought curious travellers to the area.
DAY 8 Carlsbad to Fort Davis (225 miles). We start the day with a visit to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, the 3rd largest caverns in the USA. After taking time to walk through the cave we continue to historic Fort Davis, one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars' frontier military post. In attempting to adequately supply Fort Davis and other southwestern posts, the army in 1855 embarked on an unusual experiment, importing camels. In June 1867, Lt Col Wesley Merritt arrived with 4 companies of the 9th US Cavalry, composed of black soldiers that later became known as ‘Buffalo Soldiers’. Our lodgings for tonight and tomorrow will be on a real life dude ranch, established over 100 years ago as a cattle ranch, so expect clean and basic accommodation, but what an experience..
DAY 9 Fort Davis. Today we have time to do what we want, take a horseback ride, go pistol and rifle shooting and just relax in the beauty of West Texas. We end our stay with a campfire chuck-wagon supper.
Day 10 Fort Davis – Marathon (210 miles). We head back out on the trail to Big Bend National Park, one of the largest, most remote, and least-visited national parks in the USA. We take most of the day to explore and enjoy the park’s beauty before we head to our stop for the evening in Marathon, the historic Gage hotel, commissioned in 1927as a hotel and ranch headquarters. Marathon was also a film location for the movie Paris, Texas.
DAY 11 Marathon - San Antonio (330 miles). A long but fast ride ride following the Rio Grande. Our first stop is the town of Langtry, home to the legendary Judge Roy Bean, and named in honour of the English music hall star and consort Lillie Langtry. After paying our court fines, we continue to Del Rio for lunch and then head rough the farming and ranching lands to San Antonio. This evening we can explore San Antonio’s river walk and its many restaurants and bars.
DAY 12 San Antonio – Houston (200 miles). We start the day with a tour of the Alamo, a pivotal place in the Texas Revolution. People worldwide continue to ‘remember the Alamo’ as a heroic struggle against impossible odds…a place where Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and some 200 men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. We then ride through the hill country for a BBQ lunch and then on to our final destination, Houston.
DAY 13 Depart Houston. This morning is yours to relax before we take you to the airport for your flight home.
