  • Guayabo cloud ride
  • Coffee plantations
  • Not a straight or flat road in sight

Day 1 Depart UK. We will meet you at San Jose airport and transfer to our tour hotel in Escazu. Depending on your time of arrival, why not take the opportunity to visit the nearby Multiplaza Mall.

tn_Costa Rica volcano 1 2007 H-C TravelDay 2  Escazu - Jaco Beach (160 km, incl. 30 km gravel roads). We pick up our KTM motorcycles, and after a briefing from Larry and Pablo, your guides, we head off. Today’s ride is all about mountains. We start with a brief dirt road section from Escazu to the top of Costa Rica’s Central Valley, then hit the excellent twisty roads for a fun ride through the valley. We stop for lunch in the town of Santa Marta and from there we take the twisty road through the valley of Lanas –Galan, with spectacular views and more great riding. This brings us close to our overnight stop on the Pacific coast at Jaco Beach.

Day 3 Jaco Beach - Aserri Mountains (200 km, incl. 50 miles gravel roads). In the morning we head off to Orotina on a nice coastal road, passing the famous crocodile bridge, then climb towards San Jose through the twisties of the Northern Central Valley. We have lunch at Palmichal and then start climbing towards Aserri at 2,000 m, with great views of the main coffee plantations. We then continue climbing through the coffee plantation roads with their many bends and spectacular scenery, taking us to our overnight stop at the Hotel Alta Vista, with a spectacular view of San Jose.

Day 4 Aserri – Turrialba Volcano (160 km, incl. 15 km gravel roads). We start descending through the coffee fields and on some nice deserted roads towards Cartago City (the old Capital of Costa Rica). Here we cross the valley where we'll find more beautiful scenery and cool temperatures as we gain altitude from 1,000 m to 3,000 m. The ride consists of some wide golf course quality grass sections, dual track and mountain roads. We then visit Irazu Volcano and then ride some twisties through several different types of terrain, including volcanic ash, to reach our hotel, the Albergue Volcan Turrialba Lodge, at the base of the volcano at 3000 m.

Day 5 Turrialba Volcano - La Suiza (130 km, incl. 40 km gravel roads). This morning we ride to the top of Mt Turrialba, then we continue towards Turrialba city, and the valley into La Suiza, one of the prettiest places in Costa Rica. It’s a twisty ride through the valley on a groomed dirt road, and after lunch we  visit the Cabeca Indian reservation, the only one in Costa Rica. We stay at the Lodge in La Suiza with nice home cooked food.

tn_Costa Rica road 2 2007 H-C TravelDay 6 La Suiza - San Jose (250 km, incl. 30 km gravel roads). Leaving La Suiza, we climb towards Guayabo, an area that is usually above the clouds. Not surprisingly, the scenery and terrain are again very different and the weather a little cooler. The morning ride is on easy, wide, dirt roads to our lunch stop overlooking the Turrialba Valley. In the afternoon we ride the twisting mountain roads before returning to San Jose for our last night.

Day 7 Depart San Jose.  We transfer you from our hotel to the airport for your flight back. Alternatively, if you want to stay longer, then we will arrange white-water rafting, a day’s offroad riding, or take you back to Jaco Beach for a few days’ serious R&R on the Pacific coast.

Day 8 Arrive UK.
