USA Pacific Coast Highway Guided Tour
The PCH, Route 1, Pacific Coast Highway – a slice of America like no other. From the remote, wet, pine forests of Washington and the Canadian borders to the year round sunshine of cosmopolitan San Diego and the Mexican border, we’ll see just about every type of coastline imaginable – urban, remote, sandy, densely wooded, cliffs.
We start our 1800 mile journey through 3 states in Seattle and make our way south along the strikingly beautiful coast. Ocean Shores, Newport and Gold Beach are directly at the ocean, where a Pacific Coast tour is supposed to be. We pass through the state of Oregon, enter California and ride the Avenue of the Giants, a scenic road lined with giant Redwood Trees, on our way to Shelter Cove. In Bodega Bay we’re looking for winged attackers at the old Potter School House; Alfred Hitchcock couldn’t have found a more suitable place for his 1963 movie ‘The Birds’.
A little further south the city of San Francisco is waiting and we enter in style by riding our motorcycles across Golden Gate Bridge.
Our ride down Highway 1 continues along the breathtaking coastline of Big Sur which leads us to the central coast and into Southern California. Los Angeles is our last stop before we take ourselves on a quest for the wave: Southern California’s beach towns are waiting and it’s time to show off your surfing skills in Surf City USA, Huntington Beach. Not too far down the road, passing through further famous beach towns of ‘The O.C.’, we reach our final destination, San Diego.

Itinerary
DAY 1 Arrive in Seattle. Welcome to Seattle, Washington! Take a deep breath of northern air as step outside the airport terminal and catch the complimentary airport shuttle to our hotel, and in the distance, your first sight of Seattle’s famous Space Needle. Our tour guides will be there to help with the check-in process. During the initial tour briefing this evening, we’ll get the paperwork out of the way and give you useful and important information about the upcoming adventure. After that you’ll have time to grab a bite to eat and have a drink. Get a good night’s rest because tomorrow we begin the first part of an exciting journey.
Early Birds - if you’re getting in a day or two early, we suggest you rent a car or pick up your motorcycle in advance and pay a visit to Neah Bay, the northernmost town on the US West Coast or take a ferry to Vancouver Island and explore the beautiful island. You might even want to make it a little round trip, take the ferry across the coastal waters of British Columbia to Vancouver; from here its 140 miles back to Seattle. Or explore Seattle’s unique musical heritage ...
DAY 2 Seattle - Ocean Shores (280 miles). Today the actual tour begins; southbound we ride in the early morning on our quest to get to the Mexican border the most scenic way. Olympic National Park has a diverse and stunning world, a fog shrouded coast with booming surf and waves-manicured beaches, spectacular alpine country dotted with sparkling lakes, lush meadows, glaciers, and North America's finest temperate rain forest. We are very, very remote out here, in a place that not many people every get to see. Arches and sea stacks, crashing waves, the calls of gulls, bald eagles and black oystercatchers. At low tide you may see raccoons feeding on shellfish.
At Hoh we veer away from the coast and reach glacier-carved Lake Quinault where we stop for lunch - you’re in a temperate rainforest right now. After lunch we ride along the shores of the crystal clear lake before we continue south, leaving the Olympic Peninsula and cruise our bikes into Ocean Shores. We finish the day with one of many tasty dinners to come and a nice glass of wine while looking out on the Pacific Ocean.
DAY 3 Ocean Shores to Newport (230 miles). As we reach the Columbia River we enter the state of Oregon. We visit the Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks, in the vicinity of the mouth of the Columbia River, which commemorate the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In Astoria we visit Fort Clatsop which was the final encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition during the winter of 1805-1806, before they returned east to St. Louis.
Just a little further south we pass through the town of Seaside which gained equal historical importance as the location of the Lewis and Clark Salt Cairn, where the expedition extracted salt from seawater to make fresh water.
After so much history and information we’re back on our iron horses winding our way down the Oregon Coast Highway, past Tillamook Bay to Newport where we stay for the night. .
DAY 4 Newport to Gold Beach (175 miles). Across Yaquina Bay the road now hugs the coast again and we’re presented with magnificent vistas from Yaquina Head, Oregon’s tallest lighthouse. We enter Siuslaw National Forest and the number of curves is beginning to increase. There are no tourist sights here – being out here is the attraction itself. Maybe it's the feel of being taken back to a simpler time, where life moved a little bit slower. Maybe it's the taken-care-of feeling you get as you cross over a covered bridge in a rainstorm. Maybe it's the seclusion of cuddling up to your better half, out of view from the rest of the world. Maybe it's all of those things and different ones for different people. It’s all back to nature here on the Oregon Coast.
As we reach Gold Beach we ride a short scenic loop up the Rogue River before we check in at our hotel and get ready for some first class steak and seafood.
DAY 5 Gold Beach to Crescent City (60 miles). Guided tour only, making self-guided tour 1 day shorter. After breakfast we head over to Jerry’s at the mouth of the Rogue River and where the adventurous among us get ready for a prebookable adventure of a different kind – a Hydro jetboat ride. This takes you about 50 miles up the river – have you ever managed to pass through rapids upstream? This is definitely a thrill!. Lunch is included and you’re almost guaranteed to see wildlife such as bear, otter, deer, eagles, osprey, herons and more. The river is broken up into sections with different permits required to travel each section. The further up the river the more wild it is. Some sections are inaccessible except by boat. After this trip it almost seems a little tame to get back on our Harleys. Just a beautiful 60 mile ride later, we’re rolling into Crescent City, California and boy are we tired! And if jetboats aren’t your thing, have no fear, there are some great biking roads around here.
DAY 6 Crescent City to Shelter Cove (175 miles). There are unbelievable scenic motorcycle roads out here and if we’d had about 2 weeks more we still couldn’t explore them all. Today we get a true feel for a real coastal ride after we depart from Crescent City and we’re also in for a real treat – big trees, and lots of them! Our southbound route takes us through different redwood state parks and touches Redwood National Park, our second National Park on this tour; needless to say the Pacific Coast Hwy is also called the Redwood Highway up here. After about 65 miles we reach the pretty city of Eureka with its beautiful harbour and picturesque Victorian houses. We stop for an espresso and a small snack to take in the ambiance and then continue further to our highlight of the day. We cut inland and take a road through Humboldt Redwoods State Park called Avenue of the Giants. Now this is what we call an avenue! This world famous 31 mile scenic drive is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the 500 mile redwood belt. Along the Avenue there are a number of sleepy small towns. We stop to browse in quaint gift shops for our redwood memorabilia and to take in the tranquility of this mighty place.
As the road connects back to the main Hwy 101 we are again heading towards the coast and along another fantastic and windy route we make our way to Shelter Cove, a secluded retreat on California’s so-called Lost Coast and also our stop for the night. A true gem on this amazing ride.
DAY 7 Shelter Cove to Napa (200 miles). Only one road leads to Shelter Cove, it’s the same one we need to take back until we hook up with our old friend 101 again. At Leggett we make a sudden right turn and find ourselves on Hwy 1. Right here at Drive-Thru Tree Park we visit another sight on this tour; the name already gives it away: a tree to drive through. The enormous Chandelier Tree derives its name from the enormous branches balanced on either side of the trunk. These branches, which are the size of small trees, begin about a hundred feet up the trunk.
Back on the road we head west toward the coast again. The number of curves increases and the route, now also named Shoreline Highway, is a thrill to ride. We cruise past Mac Kerricher State Park and reach Fort Bragg, the largest coast town between San Francisco and Eureka, located on the Mendocino Coast. Just a little further south is the funky and eclectic little town of Mendocino which became infamous through its massive cultivation of marijuana. Today Mendocino is the only town on the California Coast that is designated as a Historical Landmark. Established in the 1850s the architecture is reminiscent of Maine with its grand Victorians and quaint Saltbox cottages.
After lunch we’re back on our iron horses soaring down the rugged coast like a flock of pelicans. As we cross the Russian River the road seems like a horizontal roller coaster and we’re reaching Bodega Bay for the night. It is here that Alfred Hitchcock decided in 1963 that this would be the ideal location for his latest movie called “The Birds”. See for yourself that he couldn’t have found a more surreal spot for this film when you check out the over 150 year old Potter School House; an original relict from the movie shoot .
DAY 8 Napa to San Francisco (110 miles). Returning back to Highway 1 we’re in for another curvy rollercoaster ride. At Muir Beach the road leaves the ocean and cuts inland which we use as a trigger to visit charming Sausalito before diving back into San Francisco. Sausalito offers its residents and visitors stunning views of the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. Clocks seem to tick a little differently in Sausalito and the entire town appears to be in a very relaxed state of mind. There is an Italian restaurant that lures us to have lunch – and their wood fire pizza is oh so good…
Now let’s hit the road and get the final piece of road done for the day; but it’s not just any piece of road, it is the world famous Golden Gate Bridge. Don’t forget to put a flower in your hair when you reach your hotel.
Day 9 San Francisco (free day). A free day to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco, a funky, individualistic, and surprisingly small place – certainly the most liberal city in the USA. There’s plenty to do here - a trip to Alcatraz, cable car rides, a prebookable Napa Valley wine tour, or a fabulous sunset cruise with live music and food.
Day 10 San Francisco - Monterey (125 miles). Roll out of the city on the beautiful, winding Skyline Boulevard for coffee at Alice's Restaurant, then onto the Pacific Coast Highway, the famous Route 1, to Santa Cruz for lunch, fun and sun on the beach. This is one of the best rides in the world, ending in the coastal grandeur of the Monterey Peninsula, whose crescent shaped bay and cypress groves have been celebrated by poets, authors and artists. In the evening, take in the Carmel shops, Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the wonderful ambience of the bay.
Day 11 Monterey - Pismo Beach (145 miles). This morning we ride 90 miles along the cliff edges of Big Sur, the best section of Highway 1, where rocky cliffs form a sublime landscape where redwood groves line river canyons and the Santa Lucia Mountains rise out of the blue-green Pacific. About halfway along we come to Esalen, named for the long-gone native tribe who once enjoyed the natural hot springs on a cliff top high above the raging surf. We cruise past San Simeon 'castle', where we will stop for a prebookable guided tour, tiny seaside art communities and miles of sandy beaches to our hotel on the beach in Pismo Beach. As night falls, the jasmine flowers perfume the soft coastal air. It feels like paradise, and it just might be – welcome to Southern California!
Day 12 Pismo Beach – Los Angeles (220 miles). This is the home of the California beach scene, and you have time to enjoy it all. After cutting inland at Santa Maria to enjoy the great back roads and scenery we get back on Highway 101 at Santa Barbara and cruise straight into Malibu, the famous beach colony. After another 20 miles we’re in Santa Monica, LA’s oldest and biggest resort – once a wild beachfront playground, it’s now a self-consciously liberal and healthy community. Venice Beach is where LA parades itself openly along the Boardwalk, with the famous Muscle Beach gym as a focal point.
DAY 13 Los Angeles - San Diego (220 miles). Our final day’s ride is to San Diego and back, just to complete our PCH adventure. It’s a short ride to the surfing capital of the USA, Huntington Beach before we pick up the interstate and head south. Explore San Diego’s gaslight district, visit the world famous zoo, or relax at Mission Bay, before heading back. Or if you’d rather, just explore LA on your motorcycle. After returning our motorcycles this afternoon, it’s time for our Farewell Dinner.
DAY 14 Depart Los Angeles. Today is the day to pack your bags, filled with the experiences and memories of a fantastic tour down the entire West Coast, through the states of Washington, Oregon and California. It’s time to head home.
