Ghengis Khan on a Motorcycle?
The latest blockbuster to hit the screens this summer is the film Mongol, which covers the early life of Ghengis Khan. One of the greatest military leaders in history, he conquered nearly all of Asia built up the Mongol Empire.
Today, Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the World, with a population of under 3 million in an area three times the size of France. It has only about 200km of paved roads outside of the capital Ulaan Baatar but for those seeking to test their mettle, this country provides one of the most exciting and dramatic landscapes to ride across – by motorcycle!
H-C Travel has been operating in Mongolia since 2002 and offers a 16 day Gobi and the Great North Adventure motorcycle tour, riding through the desert, the steppes and the forests of the most scenic part of Mongolia - Khuvski Province.
The tour starts in Ulaan Baatar with the annual Ghengis Khan Nadaam Festival, where the ancient Mongol skills of archery and wrestling can be seen and the world famous 35km horse race takes place - Mongolians are perhaps the most skilled horsemen in the world. If watching this doesn’t kick-start the adrenalin, then the rest of the tour promises to deliver this in spades.
H-C Travel has a fleet of BMW F650s, ideally suited to the fast tracks and dirt roads that loop through grass steppes, deserts, mountains, sand dunes and stunning gorges that the route traverses. Accommodation is in yurts – circular yak felt tents – this adventure tour is not for those who seek elegance or contemporary Western style amenities. However, if you were to measure the travel experience on qualities of cultural interaction and riding lands known only to a few, there is possibly no more rewarding or invigorating ride than this tour provides.
