SA - Wild1New for 2010/11, H-C Travel’s pioneering tour to Mpumalanga and Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa on Harley-Davidsons. Our Cape tours have proven popular for many years (we are also introducing Harley-Davidson tours there this year as well) and we now want to offer you the opportunity to explore some of the great roads and scenery of eastern South Africa, ending with a safari. Our Wild at Heart tour starts with the wonderful roads and history of the lowveld, including the famous Long Tom pass, 46 km of never ending swoops and twists, sights such as the three rondavels and Bourke’s Luck potholes, and old mining towns such as Pilgrim’s Rest. We then ride south through Swaziland to the coastal marshes around St Lucia, before heading north returning via Little Switzerland and Golden Gate National Park, with some more great mountain riding. We finish off our tour in unusual style, with a 2 night stay in a safari lodge in Pilanesberg Reserve, near Sun City, where with luck you will see the Big Five and much more. Our tour includes not only your Harley-Davidson, but some fantastic accommodation, all meals, fuel, flights, and so much more, lead by the wonderful Artur and Elma, our experienced South African guides. We hope to run a similar tour on BMWs if there is enough demand, so please register now.

Itinerary

Day 1 Depart UK. Check in for your flight and relax in the airline executive lounge before taking off.

Day 2 Arrive Johannesburg. We’ll meet you at the airport, and if time allows, take you by coach to Hartbeespoort for lunch. Hartbeespoort is a large reservoir with a great relaxed feel to it, and plenty of watersports activities. Overnight in Sandton, with the chance to visit Nelson Mandela Square shopping mall.

Day 3 Johannesburg – Magoebaskloef (390 km). We collect our motorcycles from Johannesburg Harley-Davidson in Sandton, and then head north to Pretoria and on to Magoebaskloef.SA - Wild78

Day 4 Magoebaskloef – Pilgrim’s Rest (255 km). We head south into the hills and mountains of the Lowveld. There is some great riding on fast sweeping roads, and some spectacular views – the Three Rondavels, Bourke’s Potholes, God’s Window, Lisbon and Berlin Falls. We’ll stop at Graskop for their famous pancakes and then head over to the old mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, taking you back to life over 100 years ago. Royal Hotel.

Day 5 Pilgrim’s Rest – Hazyview (190 km). Today is all about two passes – Robber’s Pass and Long Tom – with wonderful views, and very different characteristics. We’ll pass through Lydenburg, with its bustling town centre and interesting local museum, and Sabie before ending the day in Hazyview.

Day 6 Hazyview – Maguga Dam (400 km). A longer day today as we head out of the mountains, stopping at Sudwalla Caves, and then heading south over rolling hills to the Kingdom of Swaziland. Obviously we’ll throw in a nice mountain pass for good measure before arriving at the border town of Oshoek, and on to Maguga Dam for the night.

Day 7 Maguga Dam - St Lucia (390 km). We head south through Swaziland, passing through Manzini and Big Ben, before continuing down to the coast at St Lucia, a quiet town surrounded by wetlands. If there’s time, take a riverboat trip this evening to see the hippos and crocodiles.

Day 8 St Lucia – Umhlanga (285 km). A relaxed ride along the coast today, passing through Richard’s Bay and Ballito before reaching our destination, the fashionable Umhlanga.

Day 9 Umhlanga (free day). Time to do what you want – ride to the local H-D dealership, take a boat trip, see Durban, or enjoy the beach.

Day 10 Umhlanga – Nottingham Road (160 km). A short ride today taking in Pinetown and Howick Falls. Rawdon’s Hotel.

SA - Wild16Day 11 Nottingham Road – Clarens (300 km). We head northeast just steering clear of Lesotho, climbing up into the mountains again through Little Switzerland and Golden Gate National Park. Some lovely riding and fantastic scenery.

Day 12 Clarens – Sandton (350 km). Our final day in the saddle as we head north through Bethlehem, Frankfort and Villiers to return our motorcycles in Sandton.

Day 13 Sandton – Pilanesberg. A complete change now as we take you on safari to finish your tour in true ‘Wild at Heart’ style. We’ll take you by coach and hope to arrive in time for lunch. After a chance to refresh, it’s off on your first game drive. All of the Big 5 are here, plus many other fascinating mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, flowers, bushes and trees. Bakubung Bush Lodge.

Day 14 Pilanesberg. A full day on safari, with two game drives. And if the weather’s right a balloon ride may be the order of the day.

Day 15 Pilanesberg – Johannesburg. After our final morning game drive, we’ll take you back to Johannesburg in time for your evening flight home. If you want to stay longer, then how about a couple of nights at Sun City, which is close by Pilanesberg?

Day 16. Arrive London. Your flight arrives early this morning and the adventure is well and truly over.
