… The most brilliant experience of our lives! The tour was amazingly organised right down to the last detail and the route provided fantastic roads and scenery. Full marks to the ‘tour captains’ and the support teams, their professionalism, friendliness and expert knowledge made the trip unforgettable. We enjoyed it so much we want to do more …
Sharon & Giles Wilson, UK, 2007
(Sharon & Giles also rode Route 66 with us in 2005)
The Wild West tour is our most popular tour, offering a modern day cowboy adventure on Harleys, travelling through California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The tour winds its way through the Mojave Desert to the gaming tables of Laughlin, the Anasazi Indians' cliff dwellings and petroglyphs, the red rock canyons of Butch Cassidy, the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, the sandstone of Glen Canyon, the cliffs of Capital Reef National Park and the famous rock formations of Bryce Canyon. The 9-day tour ends in Las Vegas, or you can join the tour in Las Vegas for 8 days. The 16-day tour continues on past Vegas, across Death Valley, stopping at a natural hot spring in a hidden canyon near Mammoth Lakes and taking a half-day to explore the back country of Yosemite, before reaching San Francisco and a ride down the famous Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, through Carmel and Pismo Beach to Los Angeles.

Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Los Angeles. Transfer to your hotel by complimentary hotel shuttle. We will be at the hospitality desk in the entrance lobby between 4 and 6 pm followed by our welcome meeting at 6.30 pm. If you're still awake, take in the Santa Monica Promenade this evening, the largest street crowd in California (except for Disneyland!). Marriott LAX.
Day 2 Los Angeles - Palm Springs (190 miles). After our Welcome Breakfast you will meet your guides and fellow travellers. We then take you to pick up your Harleys, and then the adventure begins. We head south and ride the winding mountain road down to Lake Elsinore – lots of sweeping curves, S bends and straights. After lunch we ride further east – the cool air warms as we soar into the open country of the San Jacinto Mountains, and down into the desert to the home of the stars, Las Brisas Inn.
Day 3 Palm Springs - Laughlin (230 miles). We head northeast towards Joshua Tree and ride a loop through the national park. You can see amazing colours, rock canyons and more kinds of cacti than you knew existed. At Twenty Nine Palms we hit the legendary Route 66 and ride it all the way to Laughlin through the Mojave Desert, which offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Southern California – lush grasses, startling volcanic formations, stands of Joshua trees, and sage pinon pine. Tropicana Express.
Day 4 Laughlin - Grand Canyon National Park (245 miles). We continue our ride on Route 66 into Arizona, and on to Kingman, considered the ‘heart’ of the Mother Road, in the middle of the longest remaining stretch of the road through the Hulapai Indian Reservation, with its scenic buttes and mesas. We stop for lunch in Williams, gateway to the Grand Canyon. And from here it’s a short ride and a gentle climb to the Canyon itself, at 7,500 ft. Be prepared, the view really is spectacular, and the sunsets are the reddest you’ve ever seen. If time allows, take the helicopter ride, it is quite awesome! Squire Inn.
Day 5 Grand Canyon – Mexican Hat (230 miles). If you didn’t have time yesterday, take the helicopter ride this morning. Our ride starts with a 30-mile geological expedition along the Grand Canyon rim, and into Navajo territory. You will be taken to trading posts for silver and turquoise art and jewellery, once traded for food by the local artisans. After an authentic Navajo lunch we ride through the classic Wild West landscape of stark sandstone buttes, and forbidding pinnacles of rock, poking from an endless expanse of drifting red sands. It is only when you reach Monument Valley that you realise how your perception of the Wild West has been shaped by this one place.- a perfect scenic distillation. We ride up to sleepy Mexican Hat, briefly a frenzied gold-mining camp, which takes its name from a riverside sandstone hoodoo – it actually looks like a sombrero! We recommend the local steaks tonight. Hat Rock Inn.
Day 6 Mexican Hat - Bryce Canyon (280 miles). We head out through Picturesque Bluff to the Valley of the Gods, where much of ‘Thelma and Louise’ was filmed, and cross the Colorado River where it pours into Lake Powell. Lake Powell has 1960 miles of shoreline, more than the entire US Pacific Coast, and 96 water-filled side canyons. We ride along the southern tip of Capitol Reef NP Huge cliffs), on to Glen Canyon (sublime sandstone) and up to the Devil’s Backbone through the Escalante Wilderness to Bryce Canyon. The riding and scenery are just spectacular, a day you won’t forget. Ruby’s Inn..
Day 7 Bryce Canyon – Las Vegas (250 miles). Today you are guided through the amazing natural architecture of Bryce Canyon, and then on through red rock canyons and mountain cedars on the 'Switchbacks of Zion' to Zion National Park where the beauty around every bend slows your pace. As the day passes and the altitude drops, it doesn't take long for the cool mountain air to be replaced by the desert heat. Fortunately we aren't far from the neon oasis, Las Vegas, where you'll enjoy an evening of outrageous revelry. For those of you ending their tour here, you will return the motorcycles and we’ll have a farewell dinner. Excalibur.
Day 8 Las Vegas (free day). The day is yours to do as you wish. Visit the many hotels and casinos, the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead – the choices are too numerous to mention. The 8-day tour from LA finishes this morning. The 9-day tour to LA starts this afternoon. New riders must arrive in the hotel Rotunda by 2.30 pm to get you ready for the early morning start. Excalibur.
Day 9 Las Vegas – Mammoth Lakes (350 miles). An early start to catch the early morning desert light. We pass the infamous Cottontail Ranch and swing into the switchbacks that drop off the rim into Death Valley. The vista is immense, like looking across a sea of sand and stone, as you descend about 3000 ft until you are below sea level. After lunch at Furnace Creek (aptly named!) we cross the valley floor, and swing into the switchbacks that zigzag over mountain passes and valley floors into Big Pine, along Sequoia NP and up to Mammoth Lakes. Holiday Inn.
Day 10 Mammoth Lakes - Yosemite (150 miles). Today is spent exploring the wonders of Yosemite. Ride through the winding granite canyons of the infamous Tioga Pass, take a trail etched into a vertical cliff as the mist from a 3000 ft waterfall keeps you cool, and just enjoy the park's natural wonders. Yosemite is just as beautiful, wild, rich and sublime as you’d expect, only more so! El Portal Cedar Lodge.
Day 11 Yosemite - San Francisco (200 miles). From El Portal we ride along Yosemite for a while and then head west. We cross San Rafael Bridge into Marin Count, an unabashed introduction to Californian self-indulgence: a pleasure zone of conspicuous luxury and abundant natural beauty, with sunshine, sandy beaches, high mountains and thick redwood forests. We then ride south to pretty Sausalito for lunch. Once a hotspot for drunken sailors and bawdy saloons, Sausalito is now much more like the Cote d’Azur. After lunch it’s off to the Golden Gate Bridge and into San Francisco. Tuscan Inn.
Day 12 San Francisco (free day). A free day to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco, a funky individualistic, surprisingly small place – certainly the most liberal city in the USA. We offer several excursions today, such as a trip to Alcatraz, a Bay Cruise, Cable Car rides or a Napa Valley wine tour. Tuscan Inn.
Day 13 San Francisco - Monterey (120 miles). Roll out of the city on the beautiful, winding Skyline Boulevard for coffee at Alice's Restaurant, then onto the Pacific Coast Highway, the famous Route 1, to Santa Cruz for lunch, fun and sun on the beach. This is one of the best rides in the world, ending in the coastal grandeur of the Monterrey Peninsula, whose crescent shaped bay and cypress groves have been celebrated by poets, authors and artists. In the evening, take in the Carmel shops, Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the wonderful ambience of the bay. Sand Dollar Inn.
Day 14 Monterey - Pismo Beach (150 miles). This morning you ride 90 miles along the cliff edges of Big Sur, the best section of Highway 1, where rocky cliffs form a sublime landscape where redwood groves line river canyons and the Santa Lucia Mountains rise out of the blue-green Pacific. About halfway along we come to Esalen, named for the long-gone native tribe who once enjoyed the natural hot springs on a cliff top high above the raging surf. We cruise past San Simeon 'castle', tiny seaside art communities and miles of sandy beaches to Pismo Beach. As night falls, the jasmine flowers perfume the soft coastal air outside the Whaler Inn. It feels like paradise, and it just might be – welcome to Southern California! Sandcastle Inn.
Day 15 Pismo Beach - Los Angeles (225 miles). This is the home of the California beach scene, and you have time to enjoy it all. After cutting inland at Santa Maria to enjoy the great back roads and scenery we get back on Highway 101 at Santa Barbara and cruise straight into Malibu, the famous beach colony. After another 20 miles we’re in Santa Monica, LA’s oldest and biggest resort – once a wild beachfront playground, it’s now a self-consciously liberal and healthy community. Venice Beach is where LA parades itself openly along the Boardwalk, with the famous Muscle Beach gym as a focal point. From here it’s a short ride to return the motorcycles, before checking in for your last night and our Farewell Dinner. Marriott LAX.
Day 16 Depart Los Angeles. The end of the road, as we say farewell and you prepare for the flight home.
Total mileage c. 2625 miles
