South Africa
South Africa - 7 Day Tour

Highlights of the Western Cape

If you want to sample the delights of the Cape, but don’t have the time for a longer stay, then this is the motorcycle tour for you – a real ‘highlights’ tour. And I promise it will leave you wanting to come back for more.

Highlights

— Historic Cape Town
— Ride sweeping bends around False Bay
— Discover the arid Karoo
— Spectacular Swartberg Pass
— Visit the Cango Caves and Cango Wildlife Ranch

  • Day 1

    Arrive Cape Town

You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your Cape Town hotel. This afternoon you’ll be picked up in a mini bus, issued your bike and guided on an ‘orientation’ tour of Cape Town. This evening your guide will join you for dinner and a relaxed ‘tour briefing’.

    Day 2

    Cape Town – Montagu

Your first morning’s ride is heading for the exhilarating and spectacular drive round False Bay via Gordon’s Bay, Betty’s Bay and on to the historic coastal resort and former whaling town of Hermanus. From June to early November Southern Right whales can be seen from the shore here. Leaving Hermanus your route continues inland through rich fruit growing areas to the wine making Hex River Valley and Worcester. It is then a short ride to tonight’s accommodation.

    Day 3

    Montagu

Montagu is an attractive spa town with natural hot water springs hidden in a mountain cleft, and a nice place for a relaxing stroll. Today ride the ‘7 Passes Route’: some are fast and perfectly engineered, some tortuously twisting, others over 1200 m high. During the day you will circle the Hex River mountains (where there is a ski club!), always on good tar roads.

    Day 4

    Montagu – Oudtshoorn

Leave Montagu with its incredibly contorted and distorted rock formations and enter the arid semi-desert region of the Little Karoo. Via Barridale and Calitzdorp you arrive at Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world and before checking into the accommodation visit an ostrich show farm.

    Day 5

    Oudtshoorn (rest day)

Either visit the world famous Cango Caves, the Cango Wildlife Ranch (cheetahs, lion tigers, crocodiles and alligators), explore locally on your bike or just laze round the pool. If the weather permits and you are on a BMW GS then you might tackle the huge Swartberg and picturesque Meirings Kloof passes. Descend once again to the coastal plain via the huge Outeniqua pass to arrive on the ‘Garden Route’ at its most attractive point visiting Knysna and its beautiful lagoon, the Tsitsikama indigenous forest and a diversion off the main road through two old tortuous passes.

    Day 6

    Oudtshoorn – Cape Town

The last stretch in the Klein Karoo takes you to the Langeberg mountains and the rugged Tradouw Pass. You are now back in the coastal lowlands, passing through the picturesque town of Swellendam and rich farming country to the coast at Mossel Bay. Then head inland for Robertson Pass, and the final ride into Cape Town, taking in the pretty ‘wine’ towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

    Day 7

    Cape Town

In the morning tour the picturesque Cape Peninsular with the Atlantic Ocean on the one side and Indian Ocean on the other, visiting the penguin colony at Simonstown and taking lunch at Cape Point (don’t let the baboons steal it!). After returning your motorcycle later in the afternoon, your tour is over and you’ll be whisked back to the airport for your evening flight home.

    Total Distance c. 1500 km

  • Mike, one of our guides, happy in his work

Joerg Vogel is originally from Germany, and after living in England he moved to Cape Town in 2002. His background is in hospitality, so he knows that it is the little things that make the difference between a good tour and an unforgettable experience! He developed tours firstly with Cape Town Harley-Davidson, then with BMW. Joerg was even a customer of ours once, hiring a bike from us back in 2000!
